fire! fire! fire!

The best result i've come up with can be seen in lava.jpg. but this result required alot of hand tweaking and would be very difficult to script reliably.

oooh! Well, it looks like the prize goes to Vidar Madsen with his fireanim.scm script. Take a look at his Gimp page. Pretty darn spiffy. Just for kicks take a look at an image Seth Burgess made of me on fire.

This was supposed to be a flame effect, but turned out to look more like lava and eventually became the lava.scm script avaiable at my scripts page.

The basic trick is the chain of cubism->oilify->edge detect suggested to me by Sven Riedel. This is a pretty nifty little effect and can be used for a lot of things. It makes good veins, and makes good lighting too.

• fill the image/selection with something (noise, solid noise, plasma all work well)
• run cubism (default values work okay)
• run oilify (defaults are fine...)
• run edge (defaults are cool here too...)
• gaussian blur a whee bit
• gradmap with either (burning_paper, burning_transparecny, or german_flag_smooth)

For an example, take a look at lava_example.jpg

This is more like a random candle flame effect and is fairly similar to the effect above.
• fill the selection with solid noise with settings like X size 16, Y size 2, detail 1, turbulent.
• contrast auto-stretch the result
• edge detect the result with edge amount 4
• gaussian blur with settins from about 6-10
• sometimes it helps to equilize the noise...
• gradmap with burning transparency or german_flag_smooth (looks best over a black background)
• if the flames are too straight, try displaceing the layer with another layer of solid noise a little before gradmapping...

This should get you a result similar to flame-1.jpg or flame-2.jpg

This is similar to an idea mentioned in PS tips/tutorials frequently. It has the advantage over the other method in that it adds flames "off" of an object, instead of just filling a selction.

This is another suggestion from Sven Riedel. This is more of a fiery glow effect than a flame effect, but its pretty simple.
• Make a image with something to glow around Usually soemthing with lots of contrast and some space or alpha around it works best.
• Copy the layer
• Spread the layer (use about 10 or so for the values)
• Blur the layer
• open the curves dialog and bump up the red curve and bump down the blue curve.
• lower the layer down one.
